Heidelberg, Germany - Helig-Geist-Kirche (Church of the Holy Spirit)
Lambchop with a string quartet from Kraków Poland (will try to figure out the name)
I used to travel to Germany a lot for work. The trip was so common I had even figured out how to deal with the jet lag. I would leave ATL in the early evening, arrive in Frankfurt very early morning, pick up my rental car, and drive about an hour to my destination in Heidelberg. I would arrange to check into my hotel early, set an alarm for 1 p.m. CET, and go to sleep. At 1, I'd get up, shower, get a late lunch, walk around then go to bed early. As I walked to find lunch on this trip, I noticed a poster in the Vinyl Only record shop that Lambchop was playing that night in Heidelberg. This would mess with the going to bed early part of jet lag avoidance. I called Terry to get his opinion, of course, he said I should go, so I returned to the record shop and bought a ticket.
I arrive for the show and realize it's in the giant church in the city center. The show in the church was not the odd part for this TN girl. The odd part was the bar in the back and that I was drinking beer in a church. I got over it quickly. The show was great even though I don't remember the set; I'm not sure if it's because it was 14 years ago or because I was jet-lagged. I remember being blown away by the band and the church's acoustics. It was a packed show; not sure if it sold out, but if it wasn't, it was close.
After the show, I decided to check out the merch table, and some of the guys were hanging around, including Kurt, who was offering a closed-eye sketch for 1€. I gave him my Euro, and he took a glance and started drawing. Then I said something like, "Geez, had to come to Germany to see you guys again" - he squiggled my drawing, opened his eyes, and handed me the drawing.
